R.E.A.C.H.
Revitalizing Education, Art & Culture through Hip-Hop
R.E.A.C.H. is an immersive educational experience that uses Hip-Hop as a gateway to exploring history, literature, cultural identity, and artistic expression. Created by recording artist and cultural educator SB, the program connects music, storytelling, movement, and African cultural traditions through engaging presentations, interactive workshops, and live performance.
Educational Experiences
Hip-Hop as Literature
Hip-Hop provides a powerful framework for exploring literary techniques through music students recognize and connect with. Through guided lyric analysis, creative writing, and interactive discussion, participants examine metaphor, simile, symbolism, imagery, rhyme schemes, narrative structure, and storytelling while strengthening critical thinking, reading comprehension, and creative expression.
African Cultural Foundations of Hip-Hop
Explore the African cultural traditions and historical influences that help illuminate Hip-Hop's development. Through interactive discussion, music, movement, and visual examples, participants examine African oral storytelling and griot traditions, rhythmic expression, dance, and visual arts, connecting these traditions with MCing, DJing, breaking, and graffiti. The workshop encourages cultural understanding, historical inquiry, and appreciation for Hip-Hop as a global artistic movement.
R.E.A.C.H. in Action
Lake Forest College | Illinois
R.E.A.C.H. has been presented at Lake Forest College through a special program hosted by the United Black Association. The experience combined an interactive educational workshop exploring Hip-Hop, African cultural traditions, and capoeira, followed by a live musical performance by SB. Through music, movement, cultural history, and audience participation, the program demonstrated how Hip-Hop can serve as a dynamic platform for education, artistic expression, and meaningful cultural engagement.
